The computer hardware are the parts of computer including the Central Processing Unit (CPU), keyboards, monitors, case, floppy drive, hard drive, CD ROM, DVD ROM, optical drive, tape drive, etc). Other parts called peripheral components or devices include mouse, printers, modems, scanners, digital cameras and sound card, VGA card, video card etc. The all the hardware component togather called as a personal computers or PCs.
Processor: Currently the Pentium chips or processors, made by Intel, are the most common CPU. Although there are many other companies in the market that produce processors for personal computers. Other some of the famous companies which make CPU are Dell, Motorola - Apple, Athlon, IBM etc.
Keyboard: The keyboard is an input device which is used to type data into the computer or input information. Keyboards are available in large variety with respect to layouts and sizes. The standard keyboard has 101 keys. Keyboards are designed to make typing easier. Some of the keys have special use. Those keys are referred as command keys. The 3 most common are the Control or CTRL, Alternate or Alt and the Shift keys though there can be more (the Windows key for example or the Command key).
Disk Drives: All disks need a drive to get information off - or read - and put information on the disk - or write. Each drive is designed for a specific type of disk whether it is a CD, DVD, hard disk or floppy. Often the term 'disk' and 'drive' are used to describe the same thing but it helps to understand that the disk is the storage device which contains computer files - or software - and the drive is the mechanism that runs the disk.
Mouse: Mouse is an input device whih is used in most modern computers. Mouse can have one, two or three buttons. Generally if the mouse has two buttons the left one is used to select objects and text and the right one is used to access menus/properties. If the mouse has one button (Mac for instance) it controls all the activity and a mouse with a third buttons can be used by specific software programs.
Monitors: The monitor is an output device which shows information on the screen. Monitors come in many types and sizes. Older monitors were simple and display only one colour (monochrome monitor) but todays modern monitor can display millions of colous on the screen.
Printers: The printer is an output device as it takes the information from computer and transfers it to paper or a hard copy. There are many different types of printers with various levels of quality. The three basic types of printers are dot matrix, inkjet and laser printer.
Modem: A modem is a device which is used to translate information transferred through telephone lines or cable. The term stands for modulate and demodulate which changes the signal from digital to analog. The digital signals are used by computers while analog signals are used by telephones.
